Own a Piece of History: Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood Estate Enters the Real Estate Market

Marilyn Monroe - Gentlemen Prefer BlondesOne of the allures (or detriments, depending on your vantage point or level of fame) of Los Angeles is its proximity to Hollywood and being able to run into celebrities on the street, at a restaurant, or even at the grocery store.

Just to get the obvious out of the way: they’re just people.  But they’re usually people who live in very nice homes.  And like everyone else, they sometimes put their homes on the market.  If you have the means, even being a mere mortal outside of Tinseltown, you could live in a home once inhabited by a huge movie star.

If that kind of thing gets your blood pumping, then I have quite the news for you: you could own Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood estate!  For a cool $3.6 million — quite the appreciation since Monroe purchased the home, originally built in 1926, for $75,000 — you can own a four-bedroom, three-bath Spanish colonial revival house on over half an acre of land, including a swimming pool.

For those who have zero interest in the previous inhabitants of your potential new home, fear not.  This home boasts classic architecture and is located in one of the more coveted sections of the exclusive Brentwood community. There’s much to like here regardless of its interesting history.

While I’m not in the market to purchase this estate, I still find this an intriguing reminder of just what kind of history this city holds.  Around just about every corner, at some point in time, walked famous cultural figures.  While it’s true that they are just regular people like you and I, the reality is that their larger-than-life stature helped shape our city as we know it today. Marilyn Monroe especially was an integral part in forming our notion of a “bombshell,” to which we still compare new Hollywood starlets — for better or worse.

Do you know the history about your home?  Any famous residents or interesting stories to tell?  Feel free to share in the comments below.

I can’t say that I know much about my building, but I think mine probably doesn’t have too much to speak of as far as celebrities. I used to live in Los Feliz though and always ran into that guy from “The Mighty Ducks” at one of the local breakfast joints.
