“This is Carlton, your doorman…”

For those of you who were around in the 1970s and who remember the hit television show “Rhoda,” you may remember a character named Carlton, who was never seen, but rather a disembodied voice over Rhoda and Brenda’s intercom.

The running joke with Carlton was that he drank too much and fell asleep at his desk in the lobby of Rhoda’s building.

Well, doormen have come a long way since the ’70s! Today, in Los Angeles and Malibu, we have luxury condominiums that have excellent, professionally trained doormen — only today they are called “concierge.”
