Malibu Seeks Watershed Solutions
A new and excellent article in the LA Times explores an old problem with the City of Los Angeles, which has resurfaced in Malibu, California. It is the same issue, in fact, that prompted Malibu to incorporate and become a city nearly 20 years ago: pollution in Malibu’s watershed, and how best to handle it to effectively protect the health and safety of residents and visitors.
The Watershed issue has again turned into a firebrand discussion as the City of Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Board prepares to vote on a moratorium on the development of any new septic systems in designated areas of central and eastern Malibu.
The fact that the this issue has been lingering in the area for so many years speaks to the scope of the problem. There are no easy answers and the cost of proposed solutions is enormous. One thing seems certain — doing nothing is no longer an option. The LA Times made some insightful observations, which you can read about here.
