Behind the Ferris Wheel for Beverly Hills Fashion’s Night Out
September 2, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · 2 Comments

If you happen to drive through Beverly Hills on September 10th and see a Ferris Wheel from a distance, rest assured that it’s not a mirage. The global fashion phenomenon known as Fashion’s Night Out is coming to town, and the centerpiece will be a beautiful four-story Ferris Wheel on the 200 block of Rodeo Drive.
Over 75 retailers have signed up to participate in a splurge-inspiring celebration of fashion, and shoppers will be able to take free rides on the Ferris Wheel with a receipt from participating stores. Organized by the Rodeo Drive Committee, the fun-filled evening will feature celebrity appearances, carnival-themed fashion events, charitable shopping, art installations and even complimentary manicures.
Stores include Gucci, Saks Fifth Avenue, Stuart Weitzman, Prada, Ralph Lauren, and Yves Saint Laurent. At Georgio Armani, Samuel L. Jackson will host an exhibition of his favorite red carpet looks, while Chanel will be offering free manicures to introduce a new collection of polishes. Lacoste is even staging a Wii tennis tournament, perfect for the athlete in you. Valentino is hosting casino night while Emporio Armani and Roberto Cavalli dance the night away with internationally known DJs.
And when you need a break from all the shopping, you can look forward to grabbing a bite from one of the seven gourmet food trucks that will be parked along Rodeo Drive. Border Grill Truck, SprinklesMobile and The Grilled Cheese Truck will be among the favorites. The nation’s first philanthropic mobile food truck, Cart for a Cause, will also be there to benefit Meals on Wheels.
So if you have an itch to shop, Fashion’s Night Out is a dream come true. I’m looking forward to buying a nice pair of shoes…or three. How else am I going to ride the Ferris Wheel?
Will you be at Fashion’s Night Out? What do you think of a Ferris Wheel in the middle of the most famous zip code in the world? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below. I always enjoy hearing from you!

Partners Trust: Real Estate Company to Open Brand New Office in Beverly Hills
August 27, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · 6 Comments

A few things come to mind when I think of Beverly Hills; amazing restaurants with top chefs, lavish hotels with unparalleled customer service, boutiques to suit every taste, manicured trees, and a general sense of elegance that drapes the city. Dare I say, the street signs are even prettier.
When Partners Trust announced the opening of our Beverly Hills office, an overwhelming feeling of gratitude took over. This is where we belong. This is our new home, and we’ve brought with us our dedication to being the finest real estate operation to town.
Our Beverly Hills office is located at 9378 Wilshire Boulevard, on the second floor of a striking architectural building on the South East corner of Wilshire Blvd. and Canon Drive. The building was designed by Steven Ehrlich and features magnificent floor to ceiling walls of glass with colored glass accents.
“I can’t wait for the buzz to begin because this will be the most vibrant, fun and energized place to do business in Beverly Hills,” says Founding Partner Richard Sterns. “The outdoor private patio is going to be killer!”
The beautifully landscaped outdoor patio with a zen water feature will accentuate the modern decor of the office, as well as enhance the experience of associates and clients.
Partners Trust’s Marketing Director Dane Findley says that his “inner-designer” is psyched about the office itself. “We’re planning on creating something innovative that expresses the culture of our company. Basically, it’s going to help our talented team be extremely productive and help local home buyers and home sellers have all the information that they need,” says Dane. ” I want to tell you more — it’s pretty innovative and never-been-done — but, for now, the details are top-secret!”
Founding Partner David Findley is excited about the new office as well. David worked from a Beverly Hills office on Rodeo Drive for many years. “Moving to our cutting-edge new Beverly Hills office feels a bit like going home,” says David. “I look forward to working with the great group of people, some of whom have already said they want to be a part of our culture.”
In the video below, President and Founding Partner Nick Segal gives us an overview of our Beverly Hills office:
What do you think about Partners Trust coming to Beverly Hills? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below. I will keep you posted on our progress as well as a time and date for our grand opening. We look forward to seeing you at our new office. It’s exciting. I can hear the buzz loud and clear. Beverly Hills, here we come!

When Customer Service Matters: My Car Shopping Experience at BMW
August 22, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · 4 Comments
It’s no secret that in Los Angeles we love our cars. We wash them, take care of them and may even get a bit upset at the sight of a scratch or a dent. Sometimes we even name them, or refer to them as our baby!
Most of us spend more time in our cars and in traffic than we’d care to admit. In fact, lyrics of a popular 80s song said it best: Nobody walks in L.A. As a Realtor, I rely on my car on a daily basis. To say that I can’t imagine my life without one, is an understatement.
The lease on my previous car was up last week, and the thought of searching for a new one was unbearable. I was quite happy with my previous car, so I knew that I wanted to stick with the same model. I spoke with and visited several local BMW dealerships and when customer service became the focal point, Santa Monica BMW won my heart.
Salesperson Michael Fernandes truly exceeded my expectations. He was respectful, knowledgeable and friendly and he went out of his way to get me the car I wanted. He called when he said he would, he responded to my emails on time, and most importantly, he was honest with me throughout the transaction.
When my car wasn’t ready on time, Michael offered me a loaner. He picked me up from Beverly Hills on his day off and took me to Santa Monica where my loaner was waiting for me. When it was time for me to sign for it, we realized that my license had expired. The whole situation was so embarrassing for me, but without hesitation, Michael took me to the DMV to renew it right away. I mean, who does that?
The next day my car was ready. Michael took time to patiently go over all the new features with me. Most importantly, I felt like family. I felt taken care of and my experience at this dealership reminded me a lot of how I take care of my own clients; with honesty, integrity and with my client’s best interest at heart.
I have friends and clients who have sworn that they would never purchase or lease a BMW simply based on the customer service they had received in the past from other dealerships. I think working with Michael Fernandes and owner Del Jr. will change their minds. I’m a happy camper enjoying that new car smell.
Have you ever leased or bought a car from Santa Monica or any other Southern California BMW dealership? How was your experience? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below. I always enjoy hearing from you!

Summer Challenge 2010: 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living Series~ Kettle vs Kettle
August 20, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · Leave a Comment

So many of us start an exercise routine with enthusiasm, and somewhere along the way we tend to lose motivation. In fact, the only exercise that I’ve stuck with and have actually liked is spinning!
Once in a while it’s great to change our routine to re-energize and try something different. I decided to try a new class on day 9 of my 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living Challenge. Equinox was offering a class called KettleBell Power. When I hear the word “kettle”, a delicious bag of potato chips comes to mind. Let’s just say KettleBell Power forced me to think twice about reaching into another bag. Meet my instructor Toby Massenberg in the video below:

I realized that motivating myself to exercise has so many advantages, mainly the ability to be motivated in other parts of my life. How do you keep from getting bored while exercising? Please share your thoughts. I always enjoy hearing from you!

Summer Challenge 2010: 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living Series~ My Boys on a Leash
August 10, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · Leave a Comment

The day I returned from Yosemite, I could barely move my legs. The Mist Trail hike really did a number on my body and the last thing I wanted to do was exercise. I suppose this is what happens when you’ve been idle for so long. Without practice, a four hour hike can really break down your body.
I mustered every ounce of energy i had left, called on my best friends Monty and Tyson and went for a walk to complete day six of my 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living Challenge. When all else fails, I can always count on my dogs for motivation! The best solution to the stockpile of lactic acid in my legs? Plenty of water and a hot bath did the trick.
Meet Monty and Tyson in the video below:

Summer Challenge 2010: 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living Series~ Exercise Does Not Take a Vacation
August 5, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · 1 Comment

On day five of my 30 Days of No Excuses to Healthy Living challenge I woke up early in beautiful Yosemite to prepare for a hike. On a normal vacation I would probably skip the workout. But I had made my promise on Facebook to finish this challenge, and I was going to stick to it no matter where I was.
I’m not a hiker, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I packed water, a light lunch and some snacks and I head toward what was going to be one of the most amazing experiences ever. Though most of the family was on the hike as well, my dad and I decided to stick together and go up as far as possible.
Mist Trail wasn’t an easy hike. In fact, if I wasn’t surrounded by some of the most incredible scenery, I’m not sure how long I would have lasted. But then I looked at my father who was always a few step ahead of me, and I figured that if a man in his 70’s who has had bypass surgery and a pacemaker is determined to do this, there is no reason why I couldn’t. He inspired me more than he ever had that day. I was in awe of his determination and will.
Below is the video of my hike. If you’ve ever wondered why they call it Mist Trail, you’ll find out when you watch this:

Beverly Hills Residents Live Longer Lives
July 31, 2010 by Tanaz Akhlaghi · 4 Comments
The overall life expectancy is increasing and has reached an all-time high of 80.3 years in LA County, and residents of Beverly Hills exceed that average by 5.3 years.
According to a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Study, residents of Beverly Hills live longer lives than most other Angelenos- 85.6 years! The report, titled Life Expectancy in Los Angeles County: How long do we live and why? explains why residents in some communities live longer than residents in others.
“Average life expectancy is one of the most fundamental measures of the health of a population and community,” said Dr. Jonathan E Fielding, director of Public Health. “It is an important global indicator of health that reflects the impact of major illnesses and injuries and their underlying causes, including the social, economic and environmental conditions in which we live.”
The report examines life expectancy in 103 cities and communities, and ranks each, with 1 having the longest, and 103 having the shortest life expectancy at birth. It further explores the relationship between how long people live and the social and economic circumstances within each community.
Why is it that life expectancy varies widely among cities and communities in LA County that are only minutes apart? For instance in Westmont, the life expectancy is 72.4 years while in La Canada Flintridge it is 87.8 years.
The report indicated that cities and communities with higher levels of economic hardship tend to have lower life expectancies. Those communities with the lowest life expectancies include Compton (75.7), Westmont (72.4), Lancaster (76.0).
Communities that ranked higher on the life expectancy scale are Walnut (86.6 years), Rowland Heights (85.3), East San Gabriel (85.0) and Agoura Hills (83.4).
The correlation between economic hardship and life expectancy indicated in this study are sobering. People’s risk of death and other negative health outcomes is higher among those who are poor, with less education, fewer economic resources and less social support. Furthermore, poorer communities may have limited access to heath care and education, and they are less likely to participate in health-promoting activities. They may have less access to large grocery stores, with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
What else did the report find?
~ In 1991 the life expectancy for Los Angeles county residents were 75.8 years. In 2006, the number went up to 80.3 years. Overall life expectancy was approximately 2.5 years higher than the national average.
~ Asian/Pacific Islanders have an average life expectancy of 84.8 years, while for blacks it is 73.5 years.
~Women are outliving men by an average of 5.3 years. Biological differences between the sexes may play a role, but differences in risk behavior are also taken into consideration.
~Men experience a higher rate of premature death due to homicide, suicide, motor vehicle crashes, drug overdose and lung cancer than women.
~Residents of lower income and ethnic minority neighborhoods may be at an increased risk for exposure to toxic environmental hazards in their community.
The report also suggests measures cities and communities can take to rank higher on the life expectancy scale and promote community health:
~As most premature deaths in Los Angeles County are preventable, cities, communities, businesses, schools, and health organizations can work hand in hand to create a healthy future for residents in all cities. Communities can work together to promote social connectedness and community well-being.
~Designing communities that encourage active lifestyles and healthy eating is necessary. Increasing access to safe places for residents to walk, bike, play and enjoy all forms of exercise, as well as promoting and ensuring access to affordable fruits and vegetables are key.
~Investing in education and job training programs and promoting the availability of safe and affordable housing. The ability to obtain a good education, be employed and have a place to live are fundamental to our health.
~Creating a smoke-free environments to protect children and non-smokers from second hand smoking. Beverly hills has banned smoking outside of restaurants and The Santa Monica City Council just voted to ban people from smoking within 25-feet of a door or window in any multi-unit residential building.
~Providing education in all communities to reduce excessive alcohol consumption and bringing awareness to the abuse of prescription and non-prescription drugs; promoting access to mental health and substance abuse services.
While implementing these changes and following the recommendations of this report can be challenging, it is not impossible. Creating a healthy community starts in our own home. As we make healthy lifestyle changes, it enables us to become role models in our communities.
What’s going on in your city and where do you think your community will rank on the life expectancy scale? Please share your thoughts. I always enjoy hearing from you!
