LA Secret: The Marvels of Mandeville
Mandeville Canyon Road is one of my favorite, most relaxing drives in Los Angeles, and yet not everyone in LA knows about it. It is a winding road reminiscent of a country lane (and in LA, “relaxing country lanes” are not so easy to come by!).
Driving past the gates of the large estates, well manicured lawns and interesting architecture is, for me, like stepping back in time. But it is also home to some of the best hiking trails and road biking in Los Angeles.
Mandeville Canyon is an area in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. The Canyon as most of us know it runs from Sunset Boulevard on the south, almost to Mulholland Drive on the north — however, it does not go through.
The land was subdivided in the 1920s and construction was fast and furious through about 1935, only pausing during the height of the Great Depression. It picked up again in the post-war years.
Today, Mandeville Canyon is divided into Upper Mandeville, and Lower Mandeville, separated by Chalon Road.
Lower Mandeville typically has many large equestrian estates, while Upper Mandeville has more of a Canyon neighborhood feel.
Mandeville Canyon has long been the home to celebrities, magnates and politicians, and Governor Schwarzenegger even maintains his personal home in Mandeville Canyon.
When you have a chance, I suggest you dedicate a half an hour to drive up and explore Mandeville Canyon Road. I think you’ll see what I love about it.

My aunt and uncle used to live on Rivers road just off mandeville and I always loved visiting them there. It’s so quiet that despite being centrally located it feels like you’re somewhere far from the hustle and bustle of L.A. life.
