Thought About Your Roof Lately?

524226_high-199x300 Thought About Your Roof Lately?Winter is right around the corner (this year, it begins on December 21st), so it’s time to prepare your home.

Last month, my neighbor had a roofing company start installing a new roof on his home. So, as expected, we had rain the following two days. Of course.

This got me thinking about Murphy’s Law (If something can go wrong, it will go wrong), and as we head into winter there are a couple of things that every home owner should consider that may avoid serious inconvenience in the months to come.

First off, what kind of shape is your roof in? Is it more than a few years old?

Did you have any damage to your roof during the last year, such as a tree limb falling on to it? How did the summer heat and sunlight impact its condition? Have leaves been piling up since last winter?

Any of these things (and more) can lead to damage to your roof that may not make itself known until the first serious rains begin. When that happens you may have a tough time getting ahold of a roofer to do a quick fix, because they will be very busy with every other homeowner that procrastinated about having their roof checked.

Roofers become a valuable commodity during the winter. All the while you are watching the buckets in your living room fill with rain water, wondering how much mold may now be growing inside your home (and what is having that removed going to cost?!).

So have a roofer, or two, check your roof for any potential damage before the rains begin. It is easier to fix a potential leak now than it is when water is dripping from your living room ceiling.
